Gas lanterns have been a camping staple for years. They work on propane to deliver a clean burn and bright light. With the gas also comes a bit of heat which can be great around the campfire on chilly nights. However, there are certain rules when it comes to using gas lanterns, which have been outlined below.
First and foremost, do pack extra propane. All gas lanterns are different and thus you never know how much fuel they will burn unless you try. So make sure you pack extra propane just in case.
Second of all, do the research. Check out different brand name gas lanterns. Coleman is a big name out there but there are plenty of others. There are also various types of gas lanterns including instant start lanterns which turn on with a flick of the switch.
Finally, do explain the rules of gas lanterns to the kids, especially the younger ones. Make sure they know that it is not a toy and that Mom or Dad should be in charge of lighting the gas lantern.
Do not allow children to light the lantern without adult supervision. It can be very difficult to do and children can easily burn their hands, especially when using a torch to light the lantern.
Do not bring your gas lantern into the tent or anywhere else where it may spill over and catch fire. A gas lantern should be kept away from flammable objects preferably on a table.
Do not bring your gas lantern on expeditions where it could easily break. Gas lanterns are not the sturdiest and thus if they are dropped or moved the wrong way, they could easily break. Although most of the pieces are replaceable, you don’t want to waste time looking for lantern socks and other items that were broken along the way.
Always weigh your options when it comes to making a choice about your lantern. Consider your camping needs and your family’s safety when making the decision.
